Open Letter to the PM and Premiers

As we navigate our "new normal," it is important Canada do so using all the tools at our disposal. The oil and natural gas industry is a significant contributor to the Canadian economy and is vital to the COVID-19 pandemic recovery.

It supports more than 500,000 jobs coast-to-coast-to-coast and pumps billions of dollars into government coffers.

That revenue is then used by all levels of government to provide Canadians with one of the best qualities of life in the world - paying for things like public healthcare and education, critical infrastructure, and support for society's most vulnerable citizens.

Canada's oil and gas resources are produced sustainably and responsibly with some of the highest environmental standards in the world. Through its development, we can displace energy produced by totalitarian regimes that do not have the same standards as ours in addition to contributing to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions.

And, finally, Canada's energy resources mean prosperity for all. It can, and does, lift indigenous communities from poverty to prosperity, providing jobs, training and opportunities that give them control of the future of their families and communities.

To the Members of the Council of the Federation,

In this unprecedented period in human history, we are looking to our leaders for guidance and surety as the world faces the most significant health and economic challenge in more than a century. Canada stood proudly in its coordinated, unified response to COVID-19.

We have been leaders on the world stage in terms of countering the health impacts of COVID-19, by working together in a spirit of community and humility unique to Canada.

As we continue to respond to the public health challenge, we need to also take into consideration an economy that has been battered by the necessary measures taken to protect Canadians. Hundreds of thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet – to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads.

Which brings me to my point: the role that Canada’s world-class, sustainable, and environmentally responsible oil and natural gas industry will play in the economic recovery. Our focus must be on safely getting Canadians back to work while at the same time generating the revenue governments will need to provide infrastructure and services families rely on even more heavily in times of crisis.

Canada’s oil and natural gas industry directly contributes billions of dollars to the Canadian economy in the form of royalties and taxes. That funding is then used by governments at the federal and provincial level to pay for the things that make Canada one of the best places in the world to live: world class public health care and education systems, modern, critical infrastructure such as roads, hospitals and schools and social programs to help society’s most vulnerable.

Our oil and natural gas industry employs hundreds of thousands of Canadians, both directly and indirectly. From natural gas in B.C., to Alberta’s oil sands, conventional oil and gas in Saskatchewan, steel manufacturers in Ontario, hi-tech firms in Montreal, and off-shore production in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Canadian fossil fuels put food on the table and keep a roof over the head of thousands of Canadian families.

The responsible, sustainable development of our oil and natural gas resources also benefits Canada’s indigenous people. It provides meaningful employment and lifts communities out of poverty. It is key to ensuring First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people benefit from the resources that belong to all Canadians.

In conclusion, I look forward to the Council’s continuing strong leadership on the Canadian stage. Only together, we will face and defeat this challenge, emerging stronger as a nation and a people.
